![]() Sure, mechanically, it's not the cream of the crop when it comes to the battle system. It never felt stale, and the world always felt like it had another beautiful set piece just around the corner. Symphonia had a more classic RPG approach of the world unfolding as your quest goes on. Many Tales games (read: Abyss) require extensive backtracking for no particular purpose - fly here talk to this guy fly here talk to this guy. The pacing was fantastic compared to the rest of the series. Some people prefer more politically driven stories, and that's fine, Symphonia felt like it was about people. The skits don't just repeat information, they provide new context for characterization and enjoyment. Almost all the characters have a very sympathetic back story and remain charming and likable throughout. Symphonia has the best characters and the best pacing. It's NOT just because it was on the gamecube, though the fact helps. Still able to have fun, but I wouldn't expect the magic many speak of. Dawn of the New World has a much better/engaging battle system, but the drawback is having only two main characters that grow and using monsters/pseudo-Pokemon. Symphonia 1 is going to show it's age in battle system and character models though. The extended skills were scaled back as well. It was clunky by comparison to Eternia and Destiny. It let me down because the 3D battles were so restrictive and awkward to travel the additional dimensions. I personally never liked it, but I had played Destiny, Eternia, and Phantasia prior. You'll find that most of those that say so are the ones who played it when they had a gamecube. It's not a bad game, but to call it the best is a far stretch. It was the first full 3D Tales game, but it's battle system is incredibly limited compared to more recent installments.
